Regions of Georgia

Svaneti

Location:
Svaneti – this beautiful region is one of the most populated mountainous areas in whole Caucasus and not only. It is disposed on the southern part of the Caucasus Mountain Range, where two major rivers – “Enguri” and “Tskhenistskali” begin its flow. It is not the coincidence that the highest point of the nation of Georgia is situated exactly there. The precise altitude of it is still subject of dispute. In many official sources it is said to be on 5068 above sea level, but some findings show that it is located even on higher level like 5210 m. Тhis data is provided by the photos taken from “Ialbuz” aka Mount Elbrus. On the bottom of Mt “Shkhara” the village “Ushguli” is spread. Here are also two other high glaciers of the system: “Tetnuldi” (4852m) and “Ushba” (4700m).

History:
As the history says, at first Svaneti was the part of Kolkheti (Colchis) kingdom and later part of Egrisi. From the middle ages, it joined United Georgian Kingdom. Svaneti, from the very early ages was divided into 2 parts: Upper Svaneti (Mestia) and Lower Svaneti (nowdays - Lentekhi).  Upper Svaneti is known with its free spirit, as there never were lords or slaves and everyone lived in equal circumstances. From the XIX century, Svaneti was under Russian rule, but they still maintained their freedom regardless of that.
Svaneti has always been a place where during the war times (which was quite frequent for that times in Georgia) all the treasure was hidden. Till now at the museum of Mestia some parts of it is preserved.
Svaneti is unique with its well-maintained nature and culture. Still now, visitors can see so cold Svanish castles made by stones, where at early times people lived. The height of those castles is between 20-30meters. Because of its landscape, many famous alpinists were born there, such as: Aleksadre Jafaridze, Mikheil Khergiani, etc. Svaneti still has a tradition of alpinism and hunting which roots goes deep into the past.
Language:
People of Svaneti have specific dialect that is quite different from common Georgian one and only Svan people live in this region.

SVANETI
